What is domain name renewal?
When you register a domain name, you gain exclusive rights to that domain name for a period of time but not forever. It’s more like a lease than a purchase. In effect, renewing extends your lease on the domain name.
How do I renew a domain name?
Go to the "Benchmark Connections Portal Home"and login to the "Client Area" to access your services. Click "My Domains". Check the box for the domain name you want to renew. Select "Renew Domains" from the Bulk Management Actions drop down list and "Go". Check the box for the domain you want to renew and select the number of years with payment amount from the drop down box. Please note the number od days to expiry before completing your order and renew for any domain with less than 365 days remaining to make sure the domain is your for the coming year (see "When can I renew a domain name?"). Finally, click "Order Now" and complete your online payment.
When can I renew a domain name?
You can renew a domain name almost any time, and you can extend the expiration date up to 10 years from current expiration date. It is good practise to renew domain names so they are registered to you at least one year ahead.
Why is it important to renew my domain name before it expires?
The registry allows a short period of time to renew at your normal registration price, but then they raise the price considerably, and if you don’t pay the grace period redemption price they delete the name. Once the name enters the deletion queue, we lose the ability to retrieve it for you. You have to compete for it on its deletion date, and if you’re able to regain it, it may be expensive. We strongly recommend renewing your domains well in advance of their expiration dates to avoid the frustration and expense of this process.
What is the redemption process after a domain expires?
The Domain Redemption Process is as Follows:
A domain will go into a Redemption state (RGP / ERGP) when the domain registrant fails to renew a domain. While a domain is within this state, the original web site will not be active and any services associated with the domain name (such as email) will stop working.
All domains within a redemption state will be held for 30-days where the original domain registrant may retrieve the domain for the current Redemption Recovery fee of $250 + 1 year of renewal.
If the original domain registrant does not renew during the 30-day RGP window the domain may be deleted or removed from the account & become no longer recoverable.
The redemption recovery process can be a manually intensive and costly process. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you renew domains early to prevent a potentially frustrating experience.
Prevention Tactics:
We offer a non guaranteed 29 days grace period after expiration on most TLDs. During this time, there is a loss of service to the end user. The site / email / etc. will no longer function with the original settings. NOTE: Not all TLDs allow this grace period (example = .EU has special restrictions and offers no grace period before entering this status). Therefore, we encourage you to use the tools below, or other such means, to ensure renewal well before the expiration date on the domain or service.
Set “Auto Renew†On: This is the default for our billing system. This will ensure payment you for the domain before expiration.
Domain Registrant Messaging: You will receive renewal notifications for domains that are coming up for expiration. Notification should come 30 to 45 days in advance of a domain or service expiration to prevent any loss of service.
